If snow falls in the forest, and no one shovels it, has it really fallen?

I heard on the news today that we are expecting two more storms in the next week.  I think these  may be numbers 4 and 5 since the beginning of January.  At work, there is a generally grim set to people's faces as we all brace for snow, ice, and extended commutes.  We listen fervently as colleagues discuss recent tropical or even semi-tropical vacations.
